Frozen Pipe Losses Up in 2018

Extreme cold temperatures can create costly problems for property owners. State Farm claims data shows that losses related to frozen pipes in 2018 totaled more than $270 million, an increase of more than $162 million from 2017. If the outside temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, water pipes in homes with insufficient insulation may freeze and break. Burst Frozen Pipe
A household 1/2" copper water pipe has frozen and cracked. The left pipe is hot water the right cold. Water is leaking from the crack into an unfinished basement area, the background is oriented strand board (OSB) and ice. This type of crack can happen in cold areas with poor insulation. The water inside the pipe freezes causing the crack, once water starts to flow a large amount of damage can quickly occur.
Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to un-insulated pipes under sinks and appliances near exterior walls.
